On this episode of MFP Live, Donna Ladd and Kimberly Griffin speak with David Dennis Sr. and David Dennis Jr., father and son collaborators on the new book "The Movement Made Us: A Father, a Son, and the Legacy of a Freedom Ride." The father and son duo discuss their book, and how their collaboration on it came to be. The book tells the story of the Movement as the elder Dennis experienced it, taking a deep dive into Dennis Sr.'s memories of the Civil Rights Movement–including many he had never shared with his son prior to beginning the writing process. At the same time, the book provides a glimpse into the relationship between father and son and the way that relationship was shaped by the Movement. David Dennis Sr is a Louisiana native and civil rights activist. He was the director of the Mississippi chapter of CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) and one of the organizers of the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964 and the Woolworth sit-in in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963. Dennis Sr. is a graduate of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the University of Michigan Law School. David Dennis Jr. is a journalist and author from Jackson, Mississippi. His writing has earned him the 2021 American Mosaic Journalism Prize for his story “Ahmaud Arbery Will Not Be Erased” for Atlanta Magazine. Dennis Jr. is a graduate of Davidson College in Charlotte, N.C., where he earned his undergraduate degree in English and Ethnic Studies. He also earned his master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.
